To all the authorities that may concern:

With sadness and concern, the Chilean Mathematical Society (SOMACHI) has learned of the recent ruling by Judge Jorge Zepeda, which did not consider the disappearance of the American mathematician born in Russia, Boris Weisfeiler, as a human rights crime, applied a statute of limitations, and absolved the eight officers involved in his kidnapping in 1985. See the link on the right for a copy of the court ruling (in Spanish).

Weisfeiler was a brilliant mathematician who, at the time of his disappearance, was at the zenith of his career. He had just made a remarkable contribution to science, published in the top mathematical journal Annals of Mathematics. Those who knew him can testify about his kindness. He had many interests, among which there was hiking. This motivated him to travel to Chile, but unfortunately, he arrived at the wrong place in the very wrong moment.

The disappearance of Boris at the time caused consternation in the international mathematical community, the same consternation that caused the recent court ruling, as it is evident with the signatures to this letter of distinguished authorities of mathematics from our country and all around the world. The Chilean justice system still has a chance to internationally vindicate in this case.

What happened to Boris Weisfeiler has not been clearly established. In particular, his body has never been found. Moreover, it is still unknown how much time he was kidnapped, and whether he was conducted to Colonia Dignidad (see the link on the right), although there are serious indications pointing in this direction. Therefore, after having studied the text of the judgment in detail, it appears as quite unreasonable that this is ruled out as a crime against humanity without having all the elements needed to establish such a conclusion.

This is why the SOMACHI urges all the competent authorities to reopen the case and conduct thorough investigation into de Weisfeiler disappearance that may provide the full truth and appropriate response to both Boris’ family and the international mathematical community.

Update: a formal letter along the lines above containing the list of people who adhered to this statement up to April 11th was sent to several authorities, including President Michelle Bachelet; see here, from: M. Bachelet and INDH.
